WHO WE ARE:

Victoire Ellison

Hi, I’m Vicky. I grew up with an older brother, Christian, who has special needs. He’s always been a big part of my life and it was because of Christian I decided to take up a career in special education.

I qualified as a teacher in 1996 and ever since then I have worked in schools that specialised in the teaching of pupils with severe learning difficulties. I have also gained a PGCE in autism.

My life experiences have shaped my career choices and I am determined to make a difference for young people with learning difficulties through doing a job that I love.

Siobhan Winters

Hi. I’m Siobhan and I have spent my working life in the care industry, starting in special education aged 18 and then having shared care of a young boy with special needs who lived with me and my family for many happy years.

This is the job that I am best at and I love to do – I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to choose where and with whom they live and the choice should be right for them.

Starting Embark has changed my life and I can honestly say that I love coming to work each day and am incredibly proud to work as part of a dedicated team.

It has been – and continues to be a very rewarding experience to see how our young people have blossom in the independent living environment that we are able to provide.

We have worked together as a team for over 6 years and after many conversations with concerned parents about the lack of adequate support and living environments for their children as they “move on” in their adult lives, we decided to set up our own supported living service – Embark.

We believe we fulfil a unique niche in the special needs sector, providing exceptionally high standards of supported living that cannot be found elsewhere.

We maintain that the best support comes from highly qualified, motivated and experienced staff and this is why Embark provides adequate training and development to all it’s staff to ensure the highest quality of support is available.

WHY EMBARK?

Embark offer high quality, bespoke support to enable you to live life to the full in your own home. We want to provide a way of life. You’ll be sharing a house with friends and have a support worker there 24 hours a day who will help you as much or as little as you want.

At Embark everyday is a chance to learn. Whether it’s cooking spaghetti, making bat boxes or watching interesting documentaries, your support staff are here to help.

You can also look forward a variety of exciting outings including walks in nature, trips to karaoke bars, going to the cinema, pub visits and heading to the local gym or swimming centre.

Every opportunity to see people get out and about in the local community is encourage and of course your friends an family are always welcome to pip in whenever they like.

We don’t just care about today – your future dreams and goals are also important to us; that’s why we’ll support you to find the right college courses and any relevant work opportunities.

OUR MISSION:

To ensure you love the way you live by providing you with quality support to live a more independent, full and active adult live,

Support designed for you

Our supported living services aim to support young adults with learning disabilities to live in ordinary accommodation of their own by providing them with individualised packages or support.

We’ll work together with you to develop an individually tailored support plan that will revolve around you.

We’ll listen to you and find out how you want to be supported to live your life and help you think about what you want now as well as in the future.

Embark’s support staff, your family, friends and local authorities will then work together with you, to make it happen.

The provision of our support package includes the help and supervision with the following tasks:

  • Preparing breakfast, daytime meals and snacks.

  • Household tasks.

  • Support in keeping your own room clean.

  • Getting ready for daytime and evening activities.

  • Bedtime routine.

  • Supervision with money, benefits, finances and personal mail.

  • Promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

  • Supervision with non-prescribed and prescribed drugs.

  • Help to keep in touch with family and friends.
  • Help maintaining the safety and security of the dwelling.

  • Help and support with your tenancy.

  • Emotional support.

  • Advocacy and support for education and career development.

  • Background supervision.

  • Sleep in duty staff.

  • On-call senior staff.

  • Unlimited personal mileage for day to day activities and appointments.

  • Help with shopping.

Embark can also help you through every process of your tenancy. The tenancy is wholly independent of the support provided by Embark, thereby ensuring a healthy separation between accommodation and care.

What's next?

Embark will take referrals from a variety of sources, including parents, individuals themselves, advocates, social workers, care managers and learning disability support teams.

Referring someone to Embark is simple; all it takes is a telephone call. Once a referral has been made, we will strive to ensure that an appointment is made within one week of the referral date. We will then visit you, in an environment of your choice and at a time suited to you.

The meeting will give us time to discuss initial needs and will give you the chance to put forward any questions you may have.

If you are interested in using Embark, you will then be given the opportunity to develop and participate in a plan for your future. This plan will map out what you require from the services. At this point it is necessary to inform your social worker of Embark’s involvement. This will also enable the social worker to assess your needs for the service.

Once a person-centred plan has been developed and you have a current local authority assessment and a funding agreement with the local authority, Embark will begin to design a bespoke support package to meet your individual needs. You will then be invited to become involved in the recruitment of your staff team.
